Sustainability

Taking action since the 1990s

Since our Environmental Declaration in 1992, we have implemented environmental management plans and began publicly reporting on performance in 2000. In 2008 we published our first sustainability report. Our 2021 Sustainability Report continues to demonstrate how Samsung fulfils its role as a responsible business.

Samsung is unlike many of its competitors which have limited or no direct manufacturing capability. Instead, it is responsible for the manufacture of approximately 90% of the products it sells to consumers every year. Samsung has 233 operational facilities in 74 countries worldwide, including 36 production sites. To ensure high environmental protection standards, these factories are accredited to the international management standards ISO 14001 (Environment) and ISO 50001 (Energy).

Our circular economy goals

We have established circular economy principles to minimise social and environmental impacts and to use resources efficiently throughout the entire product life cycle. Based on these principles, we developed mid-to-long-term goals for 2030 and are making all efforts to achieve them.

Expanding the use of renewable energy

We met our 100% renewable energy target for the US, China and Europe in 2020, and have committed to our Brazil, Mexico and India worksites operating on 100% renewable energy by 2025. In addition, we will continue to expand the use of renewable energy in regions where it can be secured. In 2020, Samsung used 4,030 GWh of renewable energy, a 25% increase from 2019.
