Our commitments

Microsoft is working toward being carbon negative, water positive, and zero waste by 2030, while protecting ecosystems across its operations.

Carbon negative

By 2030, Microsoft will be carbon negative. By 2050, it aims to remove its historical emissions since 1975.

Zero waste

By 2030, Microsoft aims to be zero waste across its direct waste footprint.

Water positive

By 2030, Microsoft aims to replenish more water than it consumes across its direct operations.

Technology for impact

Turning commitments
into measurable progress

From renewable energy and water replenishment to lower-waste operations, Microsoft is applying technology and partnerships to create practical environmental change at scale.

Sustainable by design: Surface devices

Surface devices are designed with circularity in mind, using recycled materials, energy-efficient performance, and improved repairability to reduce lifecycle impact.

Materials

Surface Laptop 7 and Surface Pro 11 are built with up to approximately 70% recycled materials, including 100% recycled aluminum and rare earth metals in key components.

Energy efficiency

Surface devices are designed for energy efficiency, with Windows features that help reduce power use and carbon impact.

Repairability and longevity

The Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock and Surface accessories, including keyboards and pens, are designed around modularity and reuse, supporting a longer device lifecycle and reduced replacement frequency.

Packaging

Microsoft has nearly eliminated single-use plastics (down to 0.07%), aims for 100% recyclable packaging by 2030, and uses high-recycled-content, FSC-certified fiber materials from responsibly managed forests.
